When you start it, CreaToon should be showing a medium gray preview area with "Camera" in red at the bottom.

If you just see a plain black preview area (or some sort of random colour static), that's usually an indication that you need to tweak your video driver settings before you can start working in CreaToon (because CreaToon uses hardware video acceleration, and by my guess some modern driver settings are incompatible, probably set up to run with more modern games software).

For instance, I currently have an ATI chipset (fairly low-powered) in my notebook PC. By default, I get a black screen too.
I need to open up the video settings (Catalyst Control Center on the desktop right-click menu, for Windows Vista), go into the 3D settings, go to (hardware) Anti-aliasing, and turn off the default "Use application settings", hit the Apply button in the video settings, and re-start CreaToon.
Yes, it  took me a while the first time to find out which setting was incompatible with CreaToon.

What version of Windows are you running? If you right-click on the desktop do you get some sort of video control option in the pop-up menu? Possibly it may be under Properties (it was on XP, and you had to go into Settings, and then the Advanced button, if I recall correctly).
Good luck exploring your video driver settings.

Regards, Myles.

The pop-up menu is for the Windows desktop, not CreaToon.

And yes, if you have an ATI video chipset (your computer hardware) and the Catalyst Control Center, you should definitely turn off "Use application settings" under 3D > Anti-aliasing (again, this is Windows, not CreaToon) in the Catalyst Control Center.
If you have a different video chipset in your computer, you'll have a different interface, not the Catalyst Control Center, but the same principle applies.

Once you get some of the video driver settings correctly set, then CreaToon should start with a gray main preview window with red text "Camera" at the bottom (you'll have to re-start CreaToon, you cannot change video settings with CreaToon minimised, then restore it to full size).

Until you get your video driver settings correct in Windows, CreaToon will continue to start with a black preview area (which means shut it down and re-tweak your Windows video settings again).

Regards, Myles.
