Unless you’re importing a square picture, it needs to be .png. An arm, for instance, will not be square. A background wall is square. A .jpg is a square file, regardless of how much space you use on your canvas. If you draw an arm, you get an arm and its square white background. A .png can be saved as the thing you created (with the normally white background now as transparent).
Does that answer your question?

The only way it isn’t a png file is if you didn’t save it as a png file. Did you save it as a jpeg? When you complete your photo, click File> Save as> Save as file type: .png
Did this fix the problem?

I haven’t used that program since I got APS and a new computer, so I’m going from memory.
Did you flatten your layers? That will give you a white background. Have you tried using the background eraser tool? There might not be one. Did you start as a Jpeg or a png? Is there an option to change your canvas? A transparent background will have a gray and white checkerboard pattern.
Wait, I’ve got it. I dug out the old laptop. Click Layers> Layer Properties> Uncheck “visisble”> OK
Here’s the problem you’re going to run into. When you started your project you should have left the background layer (your layers show in your bottom right hand corner, usually), created a new layer, then gone back to the layer properties to make only your background (default) layer invisible. If you drew your object on the default layer, I think your only choice is to make the whole thing invisible. I’m not sure about that, though.
Did that solve the problem? BTW, you’re not being a pain. I love taking questions, as long as they’re specific and legitimate.

1. Have you tried opening it in another program to determine if the problem’s an Anime Studio problem? 2. Is it possible that your imported picture is there, but you need to back up your view to see it? 3. Is it possible the dimensions you created it with are outside of the Anime Studio limits (too big) or are too small to see without tremendous zooming? 4. Is your object visible in PAINT.net? 5. Did you double click on your imported object to make sure it’s visible? 6. Did you add your import at frame zero? 7. Are the eyeballs next to your import visible?
BTW, I feel fairly committed to solving this thing in case anyone else runs into this problem.

VERY IMPORTANT!
If your special effect, imported picture, or other has a placeholder picture instead of the actual thing, double click your item in the Layers tree and be sure to set the Source correctly.
THIS IS ALMOST ALWAYS THE PROBLEM!
