Check the Help tab.No, you cannot add layers or points to imported Poser files. The Poser files are imported as one layer, a .pz3 (Poser) file. Once the Poser file is imported you have the ability to set keyframes the same way you would use blend morphs. You select the body part and adjust the slider to control the action associated with that body part.As far as importing other files, check your manual to see the list of files that are compatible with Anime Studio Pro 7. In the back of the manual there's an import list.-Eric

Jarrod,Thank you for the nice comment. You software does come with a manual. First i wanted to say thank you for all of the helpful tutorials, they have really helped me get my foot in the door with some of these programs. (when did they stop sending instruction manuals with software!?)I know its the old version but i recently have been working with Anime Studio Pro 7 and was wondering, if i were to use a program like poser or a picture to toon converter is there anyway to add layers or points to the imported one piece file? And i suppose even more importantly, is there any type of file conversion i will have to do since the images/files were not generated in Anime Studio?

HEY,<br

It was a while ago that I last tried it and at that time rather than get really frustrated, I moved on to some other (audio) projects thinking that I would come back to it when I was more clear headed. As I recall, the program itself wouldn't quit but the rendering process would stall in the middle of of the progress bar and no more progress would be made. ( I did leave it for hours... even overnight) I tried it quite a few times on quite a few different settings but now I'm recalling that it may also have rendered completely a few times once or twice but the finished product was really blurry... The sluggishness of the program was quite consistent when using these files... Sorry I sound like such a dilettante.. I tried so many things it's hard to remember them all and like I said I was getting a little uptight... A step away is usually productive for me at those times! So before starting again I had some ideas floating around about what might be the problem and wanted to investigate before I jumped back in... and I realize from using other computer applications that sometimes (often?) a problem is really a number of different problems... and it just takes time and patience to sort out (and experience). I have rendered other smaller projects where I used just animation and maybe a png or two and had no problems rendering...so that is what made me think it was the file size... They were BIG files... thanks for the tip in resizing... will try that.

Thank you! Did you remember to select the correct amount of frames as you set up your rendering?I'm not a Mac guy, so I can't help you out with that, but I will say that neither of my computers are anything special, and I've never had it run sluggishly from png files. It runs sluggishly if I'm animating on top of video, but you should be able to use quite a few png's.If you want a quick way to know what size to import, think of it this way. It only ever has to be larger than your entire scene size if you're going to zoom way in on the image. Otherwise, make it the size of your scene or smaller. If you want to resize them, just do it in Anime Studio. Size the layer and render it as a still image (control + R). In your preferences you can change the size of the render window. To resize a bunch of images at the same time, just stick them in a folder and resize the folder. They'll all resize evenly together.

Are you sure the program is quitting during the render? (I'm wondering if it is the program or the computer or both? I am using Anime Studio Pro 7 and I have a Macbook Pro with 0S 10.5.8... Don't want to upgrade to another computer yet because everything is running smoothly for most things that I do... (mainly music...).Anyway I scanned a photo I wanted to use at a very high resolution and after using it in several different image layers (I wanted my characters to go in front and behind bits of the photo as a backdrop... so I just used the same png in each layer but just made the part I didn't want seen, transparent... (this made all the parts fit seamlessly as opposed to cropping each part... I couldn't figure out how to maintain the size and proportions of each piece if they were cropped... so I just kept the rest of the photo in each layer as a transparency... but this means I have layers and layers of huge files... It sound kind of dumb now that I think of it... but like I said I am new at this...)
Anyway I found the program responding slowly and rendering kept quitting before it was finished... It now occurs to me that the graphics files were too big ... but before I go and start figuring out how to reduce all of them (using Gimp... any suggestions?) and still fit them back into the scenes I had them it, I wanted to make sure that this was an accurate assumption... The main problem seems to be rendering... I was doing a trial render and it just keeps quitting before finishing... Do you have, or can you recommend any tutorials on rendering formats and what they are used for? It is all Greek to me but I would like to learn so that I am not constantly doing trial and error. Thanks.

I’m not exactly sure how to word this question because I am very new to this (and to graphic editing) but I wanted to know if there is an optimum file size for png images used in Anime Pro 7 that would ensure good quality resolution on a larger screen but would not causes the program to get sluggish when working with the images. If you want to go into professional animation, as in working for a studio somewhere in America, learn Toon Boom. (If you're in an eastern country, Anime Studio seems to be more popular, based on what I see in traffic to my site.)
If you want to try your hand at owning your own studio, you'll eventually need to buy many licenses for all the computers you use, and that can be quite costly with Toon Boom's price tag. Anime Studio Pro 8 would be the way to go, IMHO.
For the average person with a budget, I highly recommend Anime Studio Pro 8 for making professional animations, but for the person that can afford the 4 figure price tag, sure, go ahead and go with Toon Boom Animate Pro. Personally, I still feel that Anime Studio has a more intuitive user interface, although Toon Boom does have more intuitive drawing tools.

Perhaps I’m the confused one. Personally, I still feel that Anime Studio has a more intuitive user interface, although Toon Boom does have more intuitive drawing tools.

Comment on Anime Studio 8 Reviews by admin

<guid

I don't think Anime Studio 8 Pro is much more difficult. It just incorporates extra features, which you can choose to use or ignore. Actually, the Pro version has actions (like a walk cycle) in the character wizard, which will probably help him complete his animations much quicker. If it's not too late to return the software, though, you can always buy Anime Studio 8 Debut and then upgrade to Pro down the road.I hope this helps. If he has any questions, there are a bunch of tutorials here, and I'll usually answer most questions in a timely manner (unless it's something more difficult that I teach on animationtrainer.com).

The Debut version has a beginner’s mode, and the Pro version does not, but in my opinion the beginner’s mode should only be used for a couple days to get used to which buttons you can use at certain points. My animationtrainer.com course covers bone rigging in step by step detail. If you find yourself needing help, please consider checking it out. That being said...
Question #1: What are you hitting the up arrow for? The up arrow has nothing to do with bone rigging.
Question #2: What does "smh" stand for? I've haven't heard this expression before. As far as I know, the videos are all done properly with nothing missing. I think you may be mistaking the up arrow for the space bar or something. Try going through the videos again and see if that's what's wrong. On the CD-Rom there was a beginner guide tutorial and in it the woman briefly showed how to do bone rigging on a star. As I watched the video I tried to practice bone rigging in a separate window. When I tried her method I did NOT get the same results. I even rewinded the tutorial over and over again trying to figure out what I missed. I kept saying to myself "Am I pressing the up key at the wrong time?" (smh).I decided to look for the answer somewhere else. After I had created my characters I decided to go online and get to the bottom of this problem. I came across your tutorials on youtube. I watched your first video about bone rigging, which you did upon request. I tried it, but I still had lousy results partially because you never said whether to press the up key or not while putting the bones in. Also when binding the bones I kept getting confused as to press the bind button before or after the bone was selected. My characters body parts kept moving all over the place. Finally I came across another video you did where you took someone elses character and tried to fix them. That video did not work for me. Can you please explain to me step by step how to do this bone rigging.

I am having a serious problem with bone rigging. I'm approving your comment because I'd like to let the world respond to your ignorance. There are lots of sample cartoons made with this software, including the opening video on the home page of this site. BTW, I have a feeling that anyone who returns it does so because they got a reality check that cartoons don't make themselves, and they actually take work. Feel free to list one feature that Anime Studio 8 doesn't have that Toon Boom (the software that makes all the big name cartoons) has, but with a 4 figure price tag.I've used lots of animation programs, and I stand by my review that Anime Studio is the best; furthermore, I believe it's also the best dollar for dollar.I can also tell you that the comments left here are from different IP addresses, so if it is the makers of Anime Studio they're doing a good job of covering their tracks. Plus, some of those leaving comments have become students of my animationtrainer.com course, and I interact with them regularly while they're in different countries and paying with currency from all over the world, so I doubt it's the manufacturer. If anyone would like to respond to this person, please feel free. I think this is a flashy packaged, and over hyped product. After reading all the reviews here I'm also fairly certain that all the positive reviews are bogus, probably posted by the people who made this product.
I figured I would give it a chance, then I got to thinking, why are there no examples of any of the cartoons produced by this software? Oh right! If it were possible than this product would speak for itself. The vague tutorals are way less than helpful. For all the time and effort it would take to actually produce something with this "Anime Studio" the end result would still be shitty. Of course, I could be wrong. Please, by all means, show me some of the cartoons and animation created using this product.

Hey I just got this and I gotta say I’m pretty much 99% sure I’ll be returning it. If you're on Anime Studio Debut, put them in a bone layer. If you're on Anime Studio Pro you can put them in either a bone layer or a group folder. If you did, then are you on frame zero? If you are, the only one that will move the layer with the bone is the manipulate bone tool. The rotate bone tool, the scale bone tool, and the translate bone tool will not move the vector layer unless you are on a frame other than zero.Let me know if this solves your problem,

I get the rigging (parent/child, strength), however, the bones are just sitting there when I manipulate, well rather the picture is sitting there the bones move. I have been unable to bind them, with the exception of binding one to the layer and watching it spin around. There has to be something I am missing. I found it oddly similar to Creatoon in a lot of ways (like setting keyframes in the timeline). While there was a huge learning curve for the drawing tools and such, the quality was soooooo much better than Creatoon. What you'll probably like best, though, is the speed you can finish an animation in. I was blown away by the quality of vector layer animation verses Creatoons cut-out animation style. It was the difference between night and day. But, I was also blown away at how much faster I could get my cartoons done.I'd bet that if you are willing to put in the time to learn the software, you'll love <strong>Anime Studio</strong>. I've tried a ton of 2d animation programs that are out there, as well as 3d animation programs, and my opinion is that none of them compare to <em>Anime Studio</em>. This is Smith Micro's best animation software, for sure. If you want to do 3d animation, I'd make another recommendation...I hope this helps.

I can say that I have never looked back or regretted purchasing my first copy of Anime Studio. It's really just one more thing to learn when there's really no need for it. The pro's to saving it in its own file is that you can put it in a convenient location, and you can make backups of it more easily. You really should be making backups of all your files quite often. They take so much time, you really can't afford to lose them. I don't think there are any cons to doing it this way. You still have the preview of the file, and you can organize your files much easier. To backup your library, you need to go into Computer>C:>Program Files>Anime Studio Pro 6>Library, every time you want to backup your file. (Other version have the library in different spots, if I remember correctly.)I believe you can save whatever file you want in the image part of your library. It's only labeled "images" to help you organize better. So, you could save .anme files with images in multiple layers there if you wanted to.

@beck: I can’t stand the library. After reading this, I plan to go back and duplicate these files, delete all but the scene layers and then save the file with just the scene layers. Then, do the same with the characters. TWO QUESTIONS: What's the pro and cons to saving something in it's own file as versus saving it in the library? And can you save an image to the library that is made up of more than one layer?

It also cannot be controlled by bones outside of that folder. The folder it's in CAN be controlled by a bone outside of it. So, you can attach a head switch layer folder to a head bone, provided the head bone isn't in the folder. The same goes for the body.

@Rossanne: If a bone goes into a folder, whether its a switch layer folder or a regular folder, it cannot control bones outside of that folder. And now I've started to try to create a body turn. I tried doing it the same way you created the head turn (creating body turn switch layers), but I'm having problems binding the bones - they originally worked, and now that I put the body in the switch layer it doesn't correspond to the skeleton anymore. I've tried re-doing the skeleton within the switch layer and using the bind layer tool but that creates some very odd and unwanted results! I don't think you've covered this - I've had a look - but sorry if you have. If you get the time, could you let us know how to create successfull body turns please? I'd like to eventually get my character to have at least 8 different angles of her so I can do 380's.Thanks,

Then you could weld the points, but you'll mess up your style. I don't know why anyone would want to do that, though. Keeping those body parts separate is the way to go, IMHO. Attaching each layer to a single bone should only take about 4 seconds with the layers you mentioned. You don't need a separate bone for each of them. Try searching this site for "bone" or "bones", and follow those tutorials. Try also watching the series on creating a character (15 parts).P.S. You can't weld bones together. It's impossible.

You can cut and paste one vector layer into a single vector layer where you’re combining all your other layers. I find this technique extremely helpful to what I am trying to do but the problem is I need to use a generated character from CW because I need all 8 angles for a motion transition (of the character jumping in a circle). The problem is that I need to put an action before the jump (which is 2 steps forward and 2 steps back). I don't want to create the action 16 times so I was wondering if there's any way to make the character wizard's switch folder change to a bone folder in order for me to do create the action using only one master folder as shown in the video? Or am I royally boned? Thanks

Hello. I seriously hope they are not charging an extra $150 for the "3d capabilities". You can't can't apply layer effects to the 3d objects, you cant control the shading color amount or direction of 3d objects, and if you try to scale a 3d object it balloon distorts unpredictably. The only cool thing I've found so far is the ability to create a 3d character and expot it to .obj, other than that I'll keep my $200.

I just tried out the trial version of anime studio pro 8. I created my whole head by making vectors, like: Head Shape, Hair, Eyes, Mouth, Ear, Nose. By using vector i get full control, of the whole head. But then the problem comes, i don't wanna make bones to them, i already know how to weld bones together, but i think there is another way. Sorry if my English is confusing, i'm not coming from an English speaking country. And is there a way to store all the different mouths i've created? So i just can click it, and it's there?

Is it possible to weld a vector to another vector? What settings are you using with the tracing feature?
I have tried many of them, and I am not new to this stuff, and I am not always producing good results. Many times, the artwork looks different than the original.
I have better luck with the tracing using Adobe illustrator.
If you can share your settings, I will try it your way and see what happens.By the way, nice comment section.

Hi Eric,<br

Plus, it's not primarily designed for animation. It's more of a graphics software with animation capabilities. Correct me if I'm wrong, but even going on their website and reading the product description I didn't read anything in plain English concerning what the software can do.If Adobe wants to give me a review copy, I'd be happy to review it, but they seem to be too big of a company to care. Someone from Adobe, if you're reading this, please prove me wrong.Top animation software in the future: I actually still wonder why Toon Boom is the top software, to be honest. Personally, I'd love to see a cheap piece of software like Anime Studio come out ahead in this industry, but it would take animation schools changing their curriculum to include it and a few cartoons to become hits while using it.

@Joseph: I didn’t mention Adobe Flash because I’ve never used it. I like that the character wizard exports the walk cycles with the characters (Anime Studio Pro 8 only), and I don't think the characters look bad, but they're not professional quality. Apart from doing a 3D design, I'm wondering if it'll be possible to get enough detail into a "canned" character that's able to be viewed in multiple views. I, like you, applaud Smith Micro on their effort and idea, but now it's time to perfect it. They seem to be a good company, and I trust they'll improve it tremendously in the near future. Perhaps releasing AS8 so fast was just to show what they're capable of; it may prove to be a mistake. I know I've been emailed by people who suffer from it crashing constantly. I'll try to post that info here. (In the meantime, please don't email me when there's a perfectly good comments section.)I agree with you on the patch layer; not worth paying full price for the upgrade, but it's a nice tool to have.I have to disagree with you on the tracing feature, though. I haven't tried it with simple art, yet. I've actually been using it for the really difficult stuff, and would upgrade just for this one feature alone. What used to take me hours now takes under a minute by turning jpegs and png's into vector layers. I'll post some samples here. From myself and the thousands who read this blog every week,

Like all of you, I love Anime Studio and I want it to be a better product year after year.I have been playing with Anime Studio 8 Pro for a few days now and here is my take.
1. Tracing Tool: OK for "VERY SIMPLE" art tracing. Some of the artwork that I traced didn't look too good and I tried many different settings. But the simple artwork looked great! But it is cool tool.2. Character Wizard: Not too good. You can't create unique characters with your own bodies. The bodies that they provide look very amateur. The artwork is not very professional to say the least. The Character Wizard needs a lot of work! Cool idea, but its still not there. It does have a lot of potential if implemented properly.3. Patch layer: That's nice, but nothing to make me pay for the full upgrade price.4. Etc. The other few features are OK, but again nothing to make me pay for the full upgrade price.I think Smith Micro drop the ball on this one. I will be requesting a full refund very soon. That being said I am a big fan of Anime Studio and it is a great piece of software. I would still recommend it, but not as a full upgrade from version 7 to version 8. I am hoping that Smith Micro will consider dropping the upgrade price or start fixing and/or adding to the character wizard ( and fix the bugs that still exist in the software from previous versions ) to make it worth the full upgrade price from version 7.

I am going to be super honest and brutal here, but with good intentions. Like all of you, I love Anime Studio and I want it to be a better product year after year.

I have been playing with Anime Studio 8 Pro for a few days now and here is my take.
1. Tracing Tool: OK for “VERY SIMPLE” art tracing. Some of the artwork that I traced didn’t look too good and I tried many different settings. But the simple artwork looked great! But it is cool tool.

2. Character Wizard: Not too good. You can’t create unique characters with your own bodies. The bodies that they provide look very amateur. The artwork is not very professional to say the least. The Character Wizard needs a lot of work! Cool idea, but its still not there. It does have a lot of potential if implemented properly.

3. Patch layer: That’s nice, but nothing to make me pay for the full upgrade price.

4. Etc. The other few features are OK, but again nothing to make me pay for the full upgrade price.

I think Smith Micro drop the ball on this one. I will be requesting a full refund very soon. This is going to solve a lot of problems for me.As for the character wizard, though, they didn't put nearly enough hand switch layers on the characters. What are there, 3 hands? That's pretty useless. I think I have about 50 hand switch layers for the characters I use in my cartoons. I actually have to add mine to the character wizzard characters, delete theirs, and add a patch layer. I have to agree with you about the clothes, too. It would have been pretty easy for them to add different pockets and collars, so you could change from a polo shirt to a button down, or shirt and tie. That's what I do with my master cartoon character files.Oh, well.

I love it. I’ve got a few character setups I want to use it on. ToonBoom as you wrote, is just out of the price range for normal folks. I do have Flash CS4 and see a lot of users using this to animate. I have made some simply walking animations with it and moving banners. My question is how come you didn't mention Flash as a top animation software? I see a lot of people using it. How do you compare Flash to Anime Studio? What do you think is going to be the top animation software in the future.Your site is very informative. Works like magic. The new rendering options are also another feature I like, it's a nice simple way of creating different styles for your animations. If you want a sketchy animations that looks like you drew it all on paper with pencil, just go to project settings and switch Stroke style to "sketchy." They also have different fill styles and layer styles. There are some other new features, but I haven't played around enough yet to know exactly what they do or how to use them. For instance, In the layers section there are now "patches" and I guess they work as mask.I'm not an expert with animestudio, there's still a lot in it that I haven't quit gotten to yet. In fact, I've been thinking about getting your videos to help me out some.

The new tracing tool is pretty cool. It comes with a number of presets and you can make your own. It's a very cool way to make origional new characters easy and fast.It does have some limitations though. For instance you can't change clothing on your character. It only comes with plain single-colored shirt, shorts or pants and I see no way to change them. So if you want your character in a particular uniform (say as a police officer) you still have to add it the old fashion way.For people who don't care to spend a lot of time making advanced looking characters and just want something quick and easy to work with, the new wizard alone will definitely be worth the upgrade.

The new character wizard is definitely the best new feature. After watching and applying what I learned from your other tutorials on bone rigging, this was the perfect bonus to tie it all together. I have found myself feeling stupid after discovering the simple solution to a roadblock that halted progress for hours or days. Sometimes those same challenges come back around and it won't take me as long to realize what I did and fix it. watching you go through the moves, the bumps, the victories and the joy of the adventure. . . some how it lets me know that I'm doing ok and I'm getting there. thank you.

Awesome.
