Where to begin to make my own website:
Making your own website can be tricky and scary, especially if you’ve never made the switch from a free blogging platform to paying for your own server space, but it doesn’t have to be. I hesitated for a long time, using Google’s Blogger platform before finally making the switch. I remember thinking what a huge cost it was paying for a web server, but in the end, it was so worth it. The amount of money that can be made when you finally switch to your own web host is so much bigger, due mostly to the ability you gain to add plugins to your site that will greatly increase your website’s SEO abilities.
I needed a blogging platform that was easy to use and versatile.
The big ones are WordPress, Blogger, Movable Type, and TypePad. I chose WordPress, and I went with the Blue Grace theme. The theme comes with fluffy, girly, nature pictures in the upper right hand corner that rotate through as people click through pages. If you’re handy with Adobe Photoshop or other photo programs (and have mid-good computer skills), you can change these pictures fairly easy and put in the pics you want. I replaced mine with cartoon stills.
Why did I choose WordPress?
I think it’s the most versatile. It has SOOOOO many plugins, you can do just about whatever you want with very little web design knowledge. A plugin is something you download to perform a function. You could download a plugin to help your site’s SEO to make it SEF (Search Engine Optimization or Search Engine Friendly) and get more traffic. You can find audio and video plugins, guest book plugins, advertising plugins, and all sorts of other ones.
How can WordPress help me earn money?
Here’s what you need to know. You can try playing around with your own WordPress subdomain (yoursite.wordpress.com) for free and see if you like it, but if your intention is to make money off your site, don’t waste your time building a detailed site. You’ll just have to move it. You can’t add Google Adsense to a WordPress subdomain site, which means…
If you want to make money, you’ll need a website hosting provider! (next article)
